Accountability Without Control
Study passage: Galatians 6:1-2. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Mutual encouragement should not become a surveillance system. A student may ask for prayer or mentorship without granting a leader access to every personal decision. Establish boundaries about consent, confidentiality and who sees notes. Accountability must include the leader's conduct and a route for concerns to be heard outside the group.
Pastoral case to discuss
A mentor demands passwords, bank statements and control of a student's relationships as a condition for spiritual growth. Which boundaries should prohibit this?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Write a mentorship agreement with opt-out rights, privacy limits and escalation channels.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
