MODULE 14 · Ministry skills
Discipleship, Small Groups and Community Formation
Discipleship involves repeated Scripture engagement, practice, mentoring, correction and community care. A ministry must be able to help people grow without making them dependent on one teacher or website. This module designs small groups with clear goals, voluntary participation, confidentiality, honest discussion and an invitation to local community involvement.
Learning outcomes
- Plan an accessible small-group study
- Distinguish growth from coercive conformity
- Build feedback, conflict and continuation processes
Four teaching units
UNIT 1 · SCRIPTURE: Acts 2:42-47
Small groups can be formative when learning, prayer, fellowship and shared service are connected. A good meeting focuses on one passage and invites observation before application. Encourage contributions but allow quiet participation. Keep the group's language simple enough that new learners can ask what a term means without embarrassment…

UNIT 2 · SCRIPTURE: Galatians 6:1-2
Mutual encouragement should not become a surveillance system. A student may ask for prayer or mentorship without granting a leader access to every personal decision. Establish boundaries about consent, confidentiality and who sees notes. Accountability must include the leader's conduct and a route for concerns to be heard outside the grou…

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: Romans 14:1-13
Christians differ in conscience and practice. Some disagreements are genuinely serious, while others involve choices that should not be elevated into tests of salvation. A leader can explain the congregation's convictions while allowing careful questions. Distinguish theological disagreement from abuse and threats, which require a safety …

UNIT 4 · SCRIPTURE: James 2:14-17
Test scores are not the entire purpose of discipleship. Look for meaningful understanding, humble questions, actual care for others and reliable participation, without creating a public ranking of members' private struggles. Offer options for service matched to ability. Keep attendance and progress records minimal and private.…
