MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 11 · UNIT 3 OF 4

Governance and Conflicts of Interest

Study passage: 1 Peter 5:2-3. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

Boards and ministry directors must understand their different responsibilities. A leader's friend or family member may have legitimate skills, but a related-party contract should be disclosed and reviewed without coercion. Written bylaws, conflicts policies and independent review make it harder for power to be used privately. The church's legal structure matters.

Pastoral case to discuss

A board member wants to hire their own company with no competing bids and without recusal. What decision process would you require?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Write a conflict-of-interest disclosure and simple approval process showing when an interested member cannot vote.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
