MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 1 · UNIT 1 OF 4
Who Speaks and to Whom?
Study passage: Luke 10:25-37. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
The lawyer's question shapes Jesus' story of the Samaritan. Before treating the parable as a collection of hidden symbols, identify the question, dialogue and final command. Explain why a pastor who skips the opening exchange can easily make the story about something it never addressed. Read the surrounding chapter to see how Luke frames compassion and discipleship.
Pastoral case to discuss
A church member quotes the Samaritan story to demand that an exhausted caregiver never ask for rest. Which parts of the text support practical mercy, and which parts do not prescribe unlimited personal availability?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Write 400 words distinguishing the question, the story's reversal and two legitimate applications.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
