Genres Shape Meaning
Study passage: Psalm 91:1-6. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Poetry employs images of shelter, wings and danger. These figures communicate trust and God's nearness, not instructions for how to avoid every illness. Read Psalm 91 as a psalm, then compare a historical narrative and a letter. A responsible teacher asks what the literary form invites readers to do, and does not transform metaphor into a prediction that vulnerable people will never face harm.
Pastoral case to discuss
Someone is told that becoming ill proves a lack of faith because Psalm 91 promises protection. How can a minister interpret the poem without shaming them or giving medical advice?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Create a three-column chart for poetry, narrative and epistle: textual feature, common error and careful interpretation.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
