← Reading and Interpreting Scripture
MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 1 · UNIT 4 OF 4
From Study to Sermon
Study passage: 2 Timothy 2:15. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Pastoral authority is demonstrated by accurate handling of Scripture and accountable conduct. Build an interpretive outline: passage boundaries, historical and literary context, main claim, potential objections and application. Do not fill evidentiary gaps with invented anecdotes or numerical claims. Practice explaining uncertainty in plain language; doing so protects trust rather than weakening it.
Pastoral case to discuss
An emotionally powerful sermon illustration misrepresents the actual biblical event. Would you retain it for impact? What correction does the congregation deserve?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Prepare a 600-word exegetical note with passage, thesis, supporting observations, one disputed reading and source list.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
