MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 15 · UNIT 1 OF 4

Listen Before You Organize

Study passage: Acts 17:22-31. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

Paul's public address in Athens begins by observing the audience and referring to its culture. Cross-cultural ministry should understand the people being served before proposing a project. Communities deserve to define their own priorities. A visiting team must not assume that photographs, speeches or donor-facing stories are more important than local needs.

Pastoral case to discuss

A foreign team announces a new church project without consulting local residents. What questions must be asked about authority, benefit and consent?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Write a listening plan with local partners, translation, objectives and a way to hear criticism.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
