MODULE 15 · Leadership and public trust
Missions, Service, Cross-Cultural Dialogue and Human Dignity
Mission has included translation, education, medicine, service and evangelism, but also participated in damaging systems of colonialism, paternalism and cultural disrespect. Responsible ministry begins with listening, local leadership and informed consent, not a savior complex. Students plan service work that can be evaluated by the people affected.
Learning outcomes
- Describe responsible cross-cultural mission practices
- Distinguish voluntary witness from material coercion
- Plan partnerships with local leadership and accountability
Four teaching units

UNIT 2 · SCRIPTURE: James 2:15-17

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: Galatians 3:28
Study how historic missionary movements operated amid empires, enslavement, economic hierarchies and unequal legal systems. Avoid celebratory histories that ignore the experience of local communities. Read missionary accounts as interested primary sources and invite histories written by the people receiving or resisting their work.…

Good intent is not the same as measurable good. Define what the community wants, who owns data, the project costs and ways to change course. Set an ethical exit plan and do not create dependence on an unaccountable outsider. Volunteer missions need safeguarding, language support, financial reporting and feedback from recipients.…
