MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 15 · UNIT 3 OF 4

History, Slavery and Colonial Power

Study passage: Galatians 3:28. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

Study how historic missionary movements operated amid empires, enslavement, economic hierarchies and unequal legal systems. Avoid celebratory histories that ignore the experience of local communities. Read missionary accounts as interested primary sources and invite histories written by the people receiving or resisting their work.

Pastoral case to discuss

An archive celebrates a missionary without mentioning their support for coercive state action. How could curators restore historical context?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Build a paired-source bibliography that includes a missionary record and local-community perspectives.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
