MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 9 · UNIT 1 OF 4
Listening Before Explaining
Study passage: James 1:19. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Pastoral conversations often involve someone whose story has already been dismissed. Begin by giving time, asking open questions and checking that you understood. Do not turn another person's grief into an illustration of your own faith. Silence can be more respectful than a premature explanation. A minister should know when to offer prayer and when the person simply needs someone to listen.
Pastoral case to discuss
Someone has lost a child and is furious with God. How do you respond without correcting their feelings or offering an explanation for the death?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Write a fictional transcript with five open questions and two reflective responses; explain which statements you deliberately avoided.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
