MODULE 09 · Care and safeguarding
Pastoral Listening, Grief and Referral
Pastoral care starts with presence and informed listening, not instant answers. This module explores grief, trauma-informed communication, practical assistance and the boundaries between spiritual encouragement and licensed clinical work. Students rehearse how to acknowledge uncertainty, ask permission, protect privacy and recognize when qualified professional care is needed.
Learning outcomes
- Use listening and consent-based conversations
- Recognize when referral to qualified professionals is essential
- Protect confidentiality and avoid harmful religious explanations
Four teaching units
UNIT 1 · SCRIPTURE: James 1:19

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 15:22
Pastoral counseling is not automatically psychotherapy. A minister should not diagnose a disorder, direct someone to stop medication, or promise that religious practices will substitute for clinical care. Build an updated local referral list and learn when specialist help is urgent. Privacy expectations matter: explain confidentiality lim…

UNIT 4 · SCRIPTURE: Galatians 6:2
Help should be offered with permission and respect for autonomy. A meal, ride, visit or connection to a trusted service may be more useful than a long lesson. Agree on a next contact rather than promising unlimited personal availability. Keep the minimum records needed for coordination, protect them, and ensure vulnerable people are not e…
