MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 10 · UNIT 1 OF 4
Power, Consent and Spiritual Coercion
Study passage: 1 Peter 5:2-3. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Church leaders hold trust that must never be converted into entitlement to money, secrecy, sex, obedience or isolation. The passage warns against domination. Distinguish a pastoral request from pressure rooted in spiritual threats. People may be free to decline a conversation, leave a role or report harmful behavior. Teach volunteers to recognize power differences with minors and adults in crisis.
Pastoral case to discuss
A leader says that questioning them is rebellion against God. Which boundaries would you establish and who can hear complaints independently?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Write a conduct policy prohibiting manipulation, confidential financial solicitation and unauthorized one-on-one meetings.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
