MODULE 10 · Care and safeguarding
Safeguarding Children, Vulnerable Adults and Abuse Survivors
No ministry training is credible without safeguarding. Students learn how unequal power, secrecy, coercion, grooming, financial exploitation and institutional self-protection cause harm. Written policies, background checks where appropriate, trained supervisors, independent reporting, and compliance with local law are essential. This course teaches principles, not a universal substitute for jurisdiction-specific safeguarding training.
Learning outcomes
- Recognize abuse and controlling behavior without blaming victims
- Describe reporting, safeguarding and documentation responsibilities
- Create boundaries and procedures that reduce institutional risk
Four teaching units
UNIT 1 · SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 5:2-3

Distinguish a pastoral request from pressure rooted in spiritual threats. People may be free to decline a conversation, leave a role or report harmful behavior. Teach volunteers to r…

UNIT 2 · SCRIPTURE: Matthew 18:1-6
Protecting children requires documented procedures, not merely an assumption that nice volunteers can be trusted. A church must know local reporting requirements. No private unsuperv…

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: Psalm 82:3-4
If someone discloses possible abuse, listen calmly and take the concern seriously. Do not promise secrecy or investigate independently by interrogating the person. Follow reporting duties, preserve immediate safety, avoid confronting a suspected perpetrator in a way that increases risk and contact professionals or authorities as required.…

UNIT 4 · SCRIPTURE: Micah 6:8
A church cannot investigate itself fairly if the accused controls the process. Independent oversight, conflict-of-interest procedures, clear grievance channels and timely support for victims are essential. Avoid statements that presume guilt or innocence before investigation, but do not make safety contingent on resolving every dispute. M…
