MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 10 · UNIT 3 OF 4

Responding to Disclosures

Study passage: Psalm 82:3-4. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

If someone discloses possible abuse, listen calmly and take the concern seriously. Do not promise secrecy or investigate independently by interrogating the person. Follow reporting duties, preserve immediate safety, avoid confronting a suspected perpetrator in a way that increases risk and contact professionals or authorities as required. Spiritual counseling is not a replacement for protection.

Pastoral case to discuss

A teen hints that a church volunteer is harming them and begs you to tell no one. How do you respond with honesty, safety and lawful reporting?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Write a four-step response plan that protects the minor, documents only necessary facts and routes the case to trained authorities.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
