MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 10 · UNIT 4 OF 4

Institutional Accountability and Repair

Study passage: Micah 6:8. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

A church cannot investigate itself fairly if the accused controls the process. Independent oversight, conflict-of-interest procedures, clear grievance channels and timely support for victims are essential. Avoid statements that presume guilt or innocence before investigation, but do not make safety contingent on resolving every dispute. Ministry reputation never outweighs a person's safety.

Pastoral case to discuss

A safeguarding complaint concerns a board member who oversees all volunteers. Who should receive and assess the report?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Draft a governance memo with independent reporting, nonretaliation, documentation and external oversight.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
