MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 5 · UNIT 1 OF 4

One God, Distinct Persons

Study passage: Matthew 28:18-20. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

The baptismal commission names Father, Son and Holy Spirit in a shared formula. Historic Trinitarian reflection developed through debates over Scripture, worship and the identity of Jesus. Do not imply that fourth-century terminology appears word-for-word in Matthew, or that a few proof texts by themselves settle every later philosophical question.

Pastoral case to discuss

A student asks why a historic creed uses language absent from their Bible translation. How would you explain doctrine's development without hiding the distinction?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Define five Trinitarian terms in plain English with Scriptural reference and one historical source.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
