MODULE 05 · Theology and ethics
God, the Trinity, the Spirit and Christian Doctrine
Doctrinal teaching connects passages across books while acknowledging that later technical terms do not appear ready-made in each biblical text. Students study the historic Christian language of Trinity, Spirit, grace, church and final hope, and learn to present their own tradition without misrepresenting other Christians. The goal is clarity with humility, not manufactured certainty.
Learning outcomes
- Describe historic Trinitarian claims carefully
- Distinguish biblical statements from later conceptual language
- Recognize where doctrinal traditions legitimately disagree
Four teaching units
UNIT 1 · SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:18-20
The baptismal commission names Father, Son and Holy Spirit in a shared formula. Historic Trinitarian reflection developed through debates over Scripture, worship and the identity of Jesus. Do not imply that fourth-century terminology appears word-for-word in Matthew, or that a few proof texts by themselves settle every later philosophical…

UNIT 2 · SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
Paul describes diverse gifts in one community. An individual is not automatically spiritually superior because of a visible experience, nor is a lack of one gift proof of deficient faith. Compare this text with Acts and Galatians, tracing the difference between gifts, fruit, and claims about spiritual authority.…

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: Galatians 5:22-26
The language of the Spirit's fruit concerns character and relationships in a community. Holiness cannot be measured only by attendance, dress codes or leader approval. Discernment also involves accountability and respect for limits. Compare Galatians' concern for freedom with instructions about love and mutual burden-sharing.…

UNIT 4 · SCRIPTURE: Revelation 21:1-5
New-creation language has comforted Christian communities facing loss and injustice. It must not be used to minimize present suffering, refuse needed medical treatment, or abandon responsibility for neighbors. Examine how the hope of renewal intersects with practical care now, and distinguish major end-times traditions without elevating o…
