MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 5 · UNIT 2 OF 4

The Spirit and Christian Community

Study passage: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

Paul describes diverse gifts in one community. An individual is not automatically spiritually superior because of a visible experience, nor is a lack of one gift proof of deficient faith. Compare this text with Acts and Galatians, tracing the difference between gifts, fruit, and claims about spiritual authority.

Pastoral case to discuss

A teacher publicly declares that every sick person has a hidden spiritual problem. How can the passage challenge status claims and protect the person?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Prepare a fair comparison of two Christian views of spiritual gifts and their practical implications.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
