MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 12 · UNIT 1 OF 4

Prayer as Honest Dependence

Study passage: Matthew 6:5-13. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

Jesus' teaching addresses prayer that seeks public approval and contrasts it with sincere communication with God. Across Christian traditions, prayer may be written, extemporaneous, individual or communal. Read the Lord's Prayer as a pattern including praise, provision, forgiveness and deliverance. Avoid spiritual scorekeeping about who prays most dramatically.

Pastoral case to discuss

A congregation member is embarrassed because they cannot pray aloud. How can a worship leader make participation voluntary and respectful?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Prepare a five-minute guided prayer exercise with options for silence and private participation.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
