MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 12 · UNIT 3 OF 4

Communion and Community

Study passage: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

Paul's rebuke of divisions around a shared meal invites attention to community conduct rather than merely ritual precision. Communion theology differs among traditions. A leader should explain the practice carefully, respect inclusion policies, and never use an emotionally sensitive service as a place for targeted humiliation or fundraising pressure.

Pastoral case to discuss

A person is publicly shamed during communion for a private disagreement with leadership. What principles of pastoral care apply?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Write a respectful service explanation that acknowledges the congregation's tradition and the need for care.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
