MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 12 · UNIT 4 OF 4
Songs, Images and Copyright
Study passage: Colossians 3:16. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Congregational worship often includes text, music, images, recordings and livestreams with separate copyrights. A historic hymn's words may be public domain while a recent arrangement or sound recording is not. Permission requirements vary by medium and jurisdiction. Teach students to keep a rights ledger and choose freely licensed or public-domain material where possible.
Pastoral case to discuss
A church uploads a recent commercial recording of an old hymn because the words are from 1740. What additional rights must be checked?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Prepare a sample worship media ledger with work, edition, composer, arranger, recording, rights evidence and permitted use.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
