MODULE 07 · Biblical foundations
Hebrew, Greek, Manuscripts and Translation Decisions
Pastors do not need to pretend fluency in Hebrew or Greek to use language tools responsibly. They do need to know the limits of a concordance number, the risks of etymological fallacies, and the difference between manuscript evidence and translation style. This module practices transparent research that can be checked by a listener.
Learning outcomes
- Use basic language tools without overclaiming
- Distinguish manuscript variants from translation choices
- Explain why words require contextual interpretation
Four teaching units
UNIT 1 · SCRIPTURE: John 1:1-5

UNIT 2 · SCRIPTURE: Philippians 2:5-11
Even without full fluency, a student can observe pronouns, clause boundaries and repeated ideas with trustworthy grammatical resources. Avoid teaching that a single verb tense proves a sophisticated doctrine that experts dispute. Present the limitations of your tools and show the full passage in translation.…

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: Mark 16:9-20
The longer ending of Mark is a familiar example in textual criticism. Ancient manuscripts and editions differ in their presentation of the ending. Evaluate the manuscript evidence and how translators note variants, without claiming that every difference is a conspiracy. A minister can teach the status of the evidence while also showing ho…

UNIT 4 · SCRIPTURE: Nehemiah 8:8
Translating Scripture involves decisions about idiom, readability, gendered language, word order and textual base. Ethical translation discussion identifies both strengths and constraints without implying that an old translation is automatically perfect or that a modern one is automatically corrupt. Beware copyright: an old source may be …
