MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 3 · UNIT 1 OF 4
Four Gospel Witnesses
Study passage: Luke 1:1-4. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are overlapping but distinct witnesses. Luke explicitly explains his concern for accounts and careful presentation; John describes his selection of events. Read their introductions and identify differences in literary shape and emphasis. An honest minister does not invent an exact chronological sequence where the accounts or scholarship leave room for debate.
Pastoral case to discuss
A student asks why two Gospels present a scene differently. How would you describe the difference before offering possible explanations?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Prepare a comparison of one Gospel episode with three observations and two unresolved historical questions.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
