Letters to Real Congregations
Study passage: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
Paul's letters respond to actual communities with disagreements, needs and different gifts. Reading one verse without the problem it addresses leads to poor pastoral advice. In 1 Corinthians 12, unity does not erase differences or mean everyone has identical responsibility. Read the chapter in relation to the letter's broader concern about status, community and love.
Pastoral case to discuss
A church tells a volunteer that unity means accepting unlimited tasks without complaint. How can a body metaphor support mutual care rather than exploitation?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Write a letter to a fictional ministry team that uses the passage while respecting healthy workload limits.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
