In the first edition, in (Jen. iii, 15, where the Vnlg. has " ipsa conteret caput," with reference to the Virgin Mary, we read nitl, instead of 1X1 !"i, with a little circle above to indicate a different reading in the passage (KTl). But this corruption was not made by Arias Montanus, the Latin translator.

VII. Joseph Athias's Text. Neither the text of llutter nor that ofBuxtorfwas without its permanent influence; but the Hebrew Bible wl, standard to sub- sequent generations was thai of Joseph At bias, a learned rabbi and printer at Amsterdam. His texl was based on a comparison ofthe previous editions with two MSS. : one bearing the date 1209, the other a Spanish Ms., boasting
an antiquity of 900 years. The first edition of
text was published al Amsterdam (1661,2 vols. Bvo), with the title, Biblia Uebraica vta cum Antiquis-
\cciiuitis!.i,,iiK I. Hanuscriptis et hae-
teniis impressis. This is the first edition in which each verse is uumbere I. A second edition, with a preface by Lensdeu, was published in 1667. These editions were much prized for their beauty and correctness, and a gold
medal and chain were conferred on Athias ill token of their appreciation by the States-General of Holland.
