III. General Histories of Savitzerland, as far as they touch upon the Reformation.
Muller (Joh. von, the classical historian of Switzerland, d. 1809) : Gesckichte der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft, fortgesetzt von Glutz-Blotzheim (d. 1818) und Joh. Jac. Hottinger. Vols. V. and VII. of the whole work. A masterpiece of genius and learning, but superseded in its earlier part, where he follows Tschudi, and accepts the legendary tales of Tell and Griitli. The Reformation history is by Hottinger (b. 1783, d. 1860), and was published also under the title Gesch. der Eidgenossen icdhrend der Zeit der Kirchentrennung. Zurich, 1825 and '29, 2 vols. It was continued by VcLLiEMiN in his Histoire de la confe'd€ration Suisse dans les XVI" et XVIP siecles. Paris and Lausanne, 1841 and '42. 3 vols. The first of these three volumes relates to the Reformation in French Switzerland, which was omitted in the German work of Hottinger, but was afterwards translated into German by others, and incorporated into the German edition (Ziirich, 1786-1853, 15 vols. ; the Reformation period in vols. VI.-X.). There is also a complete French edition of the entire History of Switzerland by Joh. von MiIller, Glutz-Blotzheim, Hottinger, VuLLiEMiN, and Monnard (Paris et Geneve, 1837-'51, 18 vols. Three vols, from VuUiemin, five from Monnard, and the rest translated).

The general literature in § 4, especially BuUinger's History and Egli's Collection. The public libraries and archives in Zlirich contain the various editions of Zwingli's wrorks, and the remains of his own library with marginal notes, which were exhibited in connection with the Zwingli celebration in 1884. See Zwingli- Ausstellung verunstaltet von der Stadtbibliothek in Zurich in Verbindung mit dem Staatsarchiv und der Cantonalbibliothek. Ziirich, 1884. A pamphlet of 24 pages, with a descriptive catalogue of Zwingli's books and remains. The annotations furnish fragmentary material for a knowledge of his theological growth. A new critical edition is much needed and contemplated for the " Corpus Reformatorum " by a commission of Swiss scholars. Zwingli's Correspond, in Herminjard, vols. I. and II.
The first edition of Zwingli's Works appeared at Ziirich, 1545, in 4 vols. UsTERi and Vogelin: 3/. H. Zwingli's Schriften im Auszicge, Ziirich, 1819 and '20, 2 vols. (A systematic exhibition of Zwingli's teaching in modern German.) Another translation of select works into modern German by R. Christoffel, Ziir., 1843, 9 small vols.
