MODULE 08 · Ministry skills

Preparing and Delivering a Responsible Sermon

A sermon is a public act that can comfort, teach, mislead or wound. Students learn to prepare from the full passage, identify a limited central claim, organize an accessible message, and deliver it without fabricated testimonies, pressure or exaggerated certainty. Classic sermons are useful models for analysis but not scripts to present as one's own.

Four teaching units

UNIT 1 · SCRIPTURE: Mark 4:35-41

Choose and Study One Passage

Begin with a bounded text rather than a motivational topic for which verses are later selected. Read what comes before and after, identify the narrative question, and write down what the passage does not say. Good sermons often have fewer claims, each better supported. A listener should be able to open the chapter and see why the preacher…

UNIT 2 · SCRIPTURE: Luke 15:11-32

Design a Clear Structure

A readable sermon follows the text's movement. Prepare an opening that honestly introduces the passage, two or three arguments grounded in it, and a closing that offers a realistic response. Avoid obscure jargon without explanation, unverified statistics and illustrations that exploit another person's confidential story.…

UNIT 3 · SCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Teach with Consent and Integrity

Pastors hold influence over people who may be grieving, afraid, ill or desperate. A sermon must not pressure them for money, publicly disclose private information, or present an invented personal testimony as fact. Explain the source of any illustration and obtain consent for identifiable stories. Speaking in plain language and allowing q…

UNIT 4 · SCRIPTURE: Nehemiah 8:8

Delivery, Feedback and Revision

Practice slowly and clearly. Listen for whether a listener understands the biblical context without already sharing your terminology. Obtain feedback from at least two people on accuracy, accessibility, pacing and pastoral tone. Recording oneself may aid review, but recordings of others require consent. Revision is part of teaching, not a…
